Nigeria: Government bans fresh investment in tobacco
NigeriaTokyo (Japan) — The Federal Government may have banned fresh investments in the tobacco and allied industry. Smoking and the pervasive use of tobacco products is a risk factor for several diseases and has been increasing in many developing countries.
In 2000, 4·83 million of premature deaths in the world were attributable to smoking with 2·41 million occuring in developing countries and 2·43 million in industrialised countries.

La mort d'Omar Bongo confirmée par le gouvernement gabonais
InternationalLa mort du président gabonais Omar Bongo, 73 ans, vient d'être confirmée par message écrit remis aux journalistes par Jean Eyeghe Ndong, le Premier ministre gabonais présent à Barcelone. C'est dans ce port espagnol que le doyen des chefs d'Etats africains était hospitalisé depuis un mois. Ce communiqué confirme les informations éventées par le journal espagnol La Vanguardia et l'agence espagnole Europa Press. Dans la matinée, le Premier ministre a pourtant démenti l'annonce du décès du président Bongo faite en France dimanche soir.
